The Solar Power Project: Lighting Up Rural Uganda & Increasing Access to Renewable Energy

Turaaka means "we shine" in the native language of Rukiga.

Join Kigezi Women bring light to the village of Kigarama in rural Uganda and help the town shine bright! We're raising funds to install solar panels in 80 new homes. Solar panels provide clean, renewable energy to the lives of children, women, and men who often rely on kerosene lamps, which are the leading cause of fatal respiratory diseases.

A $50 donation provides a single household with sustainable solar sourced light.

In 2018, Kigezi Women launched The Solar Power Project and provided over 1000+ women, children, and men with access to renewable energy. We successfully installed 129 solar panels in the homes across the village of Kakore and Nangara.

Families in the rural villages have little to no access to electricity grids and, therefore, widely use kerosene as their main source of light. However, kerosene is a volatile and toxic chemical that provides poor lighting and acutely affects people's health. Yet, kerosene continues to be a core source of illumination in countries like Uganda, which have incomplete or unreliable electricity grids.
